Gleyber Torres: How to “Keep it Tight” In Your Leg Kick

Torres is one of my favorite examples to give our athletes when looking at hitters with a gather type of leg kick.

His entire center of mass is moving forward as one unit, with the extremities coming along with it. This allows him to better drive his movement from proximal to distal vs distal to proximal.

For every action that you have in your loading process, there is going to be a reaction in your unloading process (the swing). By presetting his positioning, Torres is ensuring that once he goes to launch his swing and rotate, there is zero wasted movement and he’s able to rotate efficiently forward on his line.

Always work backwards in your swing. If you want to make a modification, look to the beginning, to your loading process, because what you do there is ultimately what sets up the actions that occur later in your swing, which is usually where we see the compensations and want to make changes. The key is understanding that to change the end product, you first need to address the beginning.
