Improving Barrel Path: Its’ Effect on Time in the Zone

Here’s a look at some of the work we did with one of our HS athletes.

The goal: hit 3/10 at 85 mph or higher, with a LA of higher than 10 degrees. If completed, add 5mph on the pitch next session. If not, take 5mph hour. We started at 70mph. He ended up on 90 (which was actually 94).

What we did: this athlete has very good rotational power, however he was struggling with consistency due to a steep barrel path (swipe left to see before/after). His goal was to mimic the angle of his barrel with the angle of the metal pole, and then swing from that angle.

By swinging from a less vertical angle, we were able to get his barrel on plane a little bit sooner, and make more consistent hard contact.

Proud of this dude for getting to 90… and then going 3/10 off of 90 to finish it off.
